I have gotten used to WinSplit Revolution in Windows and really missed it when switching back ond forth between Windows and Linux. While poking around in forums and such I found window managers that use hotkeys for window placement (e.g. wmii, ratpoison, etc.), but as cool as they are they weren’t exactly what I was looking for.
I discovered the PUT pluggin in the Compiz Configuration Settings Manager and tried to get it working. CCSM wouldn’t let me change the settings so I searched for a solution. Turns out you have to use the flat-file setting rather than the gconf-editor settings. But before changing the setting make sure to export your current settings some place safe.
Once you make the change to flat-file you go back and edit the PUT plugin hotkeys and your changes will stick. The forum post that led me to try this is here.
